The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has honoured Dr. Christopher Friday Okongko with the Humanitarian Icon Award during the NANS Entrepreneurial Conference held at Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpa Campus.Dr. Okongko, who served as the Guest Speaker at the conference, delivered a thought-provoking lecture on “The Role of Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy in Navigating the Post-Graduate Economy.” The conference was themed “After School, What Next?”In his address, he noted that Nigeria’s post-graduate economy is increasingly challenging due to rising unemployment and limited job opportunities for graduates.He cited reports indicating that Nigerian tertiary institutions produce between 500,000 and 600,000 graduates annually, a figure the economy struggles to absorb.Dr. Okongko also referenced the recent graduation of about 3,836 students from Akwa Ibom State University, noting that many graduates remain unemployed or underemployed because their skills often do not align with labour market demands.According to him, the Nigerian educational system still focuses heavily on theoretical knowledge while paying insufficient attention to practical and entrepreneurial skills.He explained that social entrepreneurship offers a viable pathway for graduates to tackle societal problems while creating sustainable businesses and employment opportunities.Dr. Okongko described social entrepreneurship as the use of business principles to solve social problems such as poverty, poor healthcare, and illiteracy while prioritizing social impact over profit.He further outlined different models of social entrepreneurship including community, non-profit, transformational and global social ventures.

In order to identify and encourage youth development enterprises and programs in the African continent, Okongko Charity Foundation, today 3 February 2026 officially endorsed the forthcoming NANS Entrepreneurial Conference, to be organised by the office of the National Treasurer, Comrade Heritage Akan.The Foundation gave the node when it played host to a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS in its corporate office, 118 Atiku Abubakar Way, Uyo, who were on a courtesy visit to the Foundation.Briefing the Foundation on the plans to float the conference with the theme: ‘After School, What Next’, NANS national Treasurer, Comr. Heritage Akan, said it has become pertinent to educate undergraduate Nigerian Students on the hands-on skills they should have while in school, so as to become economically relevant and self employed after school.While acknowledging the contributions of the Okongko Charity Foundation to scholarship and youth capital development, especially by way of sponsorship of over two thousand (2000) students, grants to youth and the vulnerable, the NANS Treasurer divulged that during the occasion, the Foundation’s President, Dr Chris Okongko will be honoured as the “Icon of Humanitarian services and Students Empowerment” while also serving as a Guest Speaker.Receiving the delegation at the Foundation’s Conference Hall on behalf of the President of the Foundation, the African Representative, Sir Daniel Ekanem, commended the NANS Treasurer for ”thinking outside the box towards the development of the next generation of Nigerian youths”, describing the gesture as thoughtful and introspective.

Dr. Chris Okongko, a Canada-based business mogul and philanthropist, has been crowned with the traditional title “Anwam Ndito Ugwene Ukanafun” (meaning the Chief Helper to the Needy) by the 5th Paramount Ruler of Ukanafun LGA, Akuku (Engr) Amos Daniel Akpan.The conferment took place during the coronation ceremony of the 5th Paramount Ruler of Ukanafun, His Royal Majesty, Akuku Amos Akpan, JP, an event that drew high-profile dignitaries from across the state and beyond.The ceremony also featured the recognition of other eminent Akwa Ibom indigenes for their service and impact.Dr. Okongko is the founder of the Okongko Charity Foundation, a platform widely known for its consistent interventions in humanitarian causes, particularly in support of the less privileged and vulnerable members of society. Earlier, the MD of Redemption FM – Abak, Comfort Umanah, expressed gratitude to Dr. Okongko for his dedicated service to humanity via his Foundation. Describing Dr. Okongko as a man with a big heart filled with milk of kindness, the veteran broadcaster said the broadcast medium was excited to partner with the Foundation as part of its corporate social responsibility, to give a voice to those who need to listen and receive help. She explained that the beneficiaries were chosen through a transparent process, where they simply called into the Redemption FM radio program and were then selected and empowered. MD Umanah, a retired Director in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Information, described the beneficiaries as the “VVIPs of the day,” deserving of the special treats. On behalf of the Foundation, the African Representative, Sir Daniel Ekanem, gave thanks to God for the grace given to its President to lead such humanitarian efforts. He reeled out some programs and interventions the Foundation has carried out and encouraged the new beneficiaries to judiciously use the seed funds to grow their businesses. He recounted how a trader who was earlier given similar support—a token of 100,000 (one hundred thousand) to start a small-scale business has today gotten 1,000,000 (one million) from the Foundation following her commitment and success in the business.
