• As SCASSON Hails OKONGKO CHARITY FOUNDATION
The University of Uyo has conferred a distinguished humanitarian service award on DR. CHRIS OKONGKO, a Canada-based philanthropist and founder of the Okongko Charity Foundation, in recognition of his consistent support for vulnerable students and underserved communities across Nigeria.
The award which was presented during a ceremony organized by the Students Counselling of Nigeria, SCASSON, at the University’s main campus, brought together academic leaders, student representatives and civil society actors to celebrate individuals making tangible contributions to educational development and social welfare.
Dr. Okongko, who resides in Canada and oversees numerous philanthropic initiatives across Africa, was represented at the ceremony by the Foundation’s African Representative, MR. DANIEL EKANEM. Receiving the award on his behalf, Mr. Ekanem conveyed the donor’s gratitude and reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to bridging inequality through targeted interventions.
“Dr. Okongko is deeply honoured by this recognition, He remains committed to ensuring that no promising student is left behind due to socio-economic disadvantage. Education is the strongest tool for liberation and this Foundation exists to make that access possible.” Mr. Ekanem said.
Over the years, the Okongko Charity Foundation has provided scholarships, educational materials and welfare support to hundreds of students in tertiary institutions, while also initiating sustainable aid projects in rural communities, ranging from health outreaches, road grading, amongst others.
Speaking at the event, SCASSON President, Comrade Itohowo Friday, praised the far-reaching impact of the Foundation, describing it as “a beacon of hope in a system where many students struggle to remain in school.”
“Dr. Okongko’s work transcends borders. His generosity is not just felt, it is lived by those who otherwise would have dropped out of school or gone without basic needs,” He said.
The ceremony concluded with a renewed call for multi-stakeholder collaboration in tackling student poverty and promoting inclusive education, especially in regions facing socio-economic challenges.
The award presented to Dr. Okongko stands as the University of Uyo’s recognition of private-sector efforts in complementing public education and grassroots empowerment.
Okongko Charity Foundation as at the last count, enrolled no fewer than 2000 indigent yet intelligent students studying in the various institutions in Nigeria and Africa into its Scholarship Roll. Just last weekend, 2 University of Uyo students from Akwa Ibom were offered scholarship by the Foundation.
